What the law requires
The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 apply to "users" — people who use screens as a significant part of their normal work. For users, employers must:
- assess their workstations and reduce the risks found;
- plan work so screen time is broken up by breaks or changes of activity;
- provide an eye and eyesight test on request;
- provide training and information on using their workstation safely.
The duties apply to people working at home as well as in the office.
Common fixes
- Raise the screen so the top is at or just below eye level.
- Use a separate keyboard, mouse and laptop stand for long laptop sessions.
- Adjust the chair so feet are flat on the floor, or provide a footrest.
- Turn the screen or use blinds to cut glare from windows.
- Build short, regular breaks away from the screen into the day.
Record wider workplace hazards in a general risk assessment.
